Forgive me, it was a hell of a job to compile this list for one little mail.

IIRC wasn't it recorded "live" in an empty pub - no audience (seems to ring
a bell) by the Mr Universe line up? One of those spur of the moment things
that turned out well enough to be released.

Might be. Don't know the story, though. The sound is typical Gillan, which
makes it hard to tell if it was recorded professionally or live. :o) But
it's a good version.

Iron Maiden - Smoke On The Water (interview/live)
Iron Maiden - Smoke On The Water (live)
Bzzt. This must be an error. They have never, ever, played this song as a
band. Dickinson may have done it, and I know Di'Anno has done it. But I'm
99% sure they've never done it as Iron Maiden. If I got a sample of it, I
could probably hear where it's from.

Nope, it's bootleg both. One is from an MTV broadcast called "Behind The
Iron Curtain" and one is from a rarities bootleg (don't have the name at
hand).

That and the well known fact that Bruce loves DP, is enough to be sure.

Yes, and Gers obviously is addicted to Purple as well. But it can't be
Maiden the band that plays it, or I am sure I would have known. I can't
remember the smokester being in the Behind the Iron Curtain video either, in
any form or shape. It would be interesting to hear what it is. I'm like a
BIG fan of Maiden, so I can recorgnize the styles of each Maiden member if I
hear it. If you figure out a way to send it to me ( i can give you my mail
adress), then let me know. The only way that they could have played it
together would have been a soundcheck or something, as they never play cover
songs live. And there was of course the time Nico and Bruce D was on stage
with the band, recently.

Does the Maiden bootleg "High Vaultage vol. 1" mean anything ??

Its MOST DEFINATLY:

a. Iron Maiden in the interview part
b. Bruce Dickinson on vocals
c. NOT the version with Deep Purple
d. NOT the version of Paul Di'Anno with killers (usin' We Will Rock You)
e. NOT the Rock Aid Armenia version

aditional info on the live/interview one:
"from the MTV broadcast of Iron Maiden -
Behind The Iron Curtain. 1984
Introduction by Nicko McBrain."

Can't help it, but I've seen many versions of this one pass the cybernet and
they all claim the High Vaultage bootleg (which is a compilation of rarities
I believe which might explain you not knowing it) .

I'm not a hard core maiden fan, but I can't help the info I got.
The only explanation I can come up with is that it's Bruce solo. But 1984 ??

And wasn't there a special Maiden show once where they ONLY played covers.
I'm almost sure I saw that news pass somewhere.

Try lookin' for the track with a P2P, if you can't find it quick I'll try to
find a way to get it to you.

Greetzzz

Cheers. I'll look for this. I know, according to the Behind the Iron Curtain
video, that they did a small jam session in a Polish wedding they walked in
on. (you know where Bruce sings "and even Rod Smallwood's dancing" etc) And
that I think was both in Poland and in 1984. So maybe it's from that jam?
I'll try and find it on soulseek, and then we'll see.:o)

Ok, I finally found and heard the Smokester. And I have never heard, or at
least noticed, this version of it before. And I thought I'd heard it all! I
also discovered some other rare Maiden tracks through the High Vaultage
search that I'd never heard before...ah, well. But back to the smokester:
judging by the info (Poland 84) and the sound without any distortion on the
guitars, I'm convinced it is Maiden, and that it's from the wedding they
walked in on (the one I mentioned earlier)

weren't even born till after Maiden were well known or stopped buying
records in the '70s so they'd have had no chance at all of working it out.

That's a shame. There hasn't been extremely many good rock acts from the UK
these last 20 years, so I would have thought that you were holding on to the
memories of the glory days in the 60's, 70's and a little of the 80's, but
obviously I was wrong. :o)

If you added up all of the TV and Radio play that non-chart rock gets in the
uk and traded it in for advertising time you couldn't swap it for enough
spandex to make one of Britney's stage costumes.

On the bright side I get the impression that prog rock, punk and metal are
all making progress at the moment, the music buying/downloading public here
may be starting to realise that they're still buying the same Boy Bland
single that was being hawked at them ten years ago (some might even have
realised it was even crap then).

Still there are some really bizarre experiences to be had for instance what
do you do in the front row of an Offspring gig eh? Now me, boring serious
married with kids thirty seven thinks - Ah I'll jump up and down cheer,
pogo, headbang and have a generally great time, but the sixteen year old
next to me sat still showing less visible signs of fun than I do when I go
to the opera (she'll probably grow up to be social worker) - she acted older
than my dad does!

I'll pass that message on to a couple of 18 year olds, a 21 year old and a
sixty two year old who were there :-) I'm afraid that music education in

That's a shame. There hasn't been extremely many good rock acts from the UK
these last 20 years, so I would have thought that you were holding on to the
memories of the glory days in the 60's, 70's and a little of the 80's, but
obviously I was wrong. :o)

I think Nicko _is_ of the most known faces :-D

Ok, maybe he is. But he's not the member of the band that usually gets his
face printed on covers of magazines. :o)

and I'd seen Maiden live loads of times - quite a few of the people there
weren't even born till after Maiden were well known or stopped buying
records in the '70s so they'd have had no chance at all of working it out.
That's so strange. But to their defence, Dickinson doesn't look like he used
to and Nicko and Gers aren't the most known faces in rock industry. But at
least not knowing the names I concider unforgivable. :o)
I might have recognised Dickinson if he still had long hair ;-)

But as for not knowing the names -- Gillan never mentioned their names!

Guess he thought like me that they were famous enough for recognition. :o)

There are probably about 800 bootlegs of Gers and Dickenson performing it
with the guy's on JL's fairwell tour too (sniff sniff sob)
Post by Harrie Hendriksen
Nope, it's bootleg both. One is from an MTV broadcast called "Behind The
Iron Curtain" and one is from a rarities bootleg (don't have the name at
hand).
That and the well known fact that Bruce loves DP, is enough to be sure.

Pardon my curiosity of master of all things Smoky and Water related but
wasn't there a Gillan studio version on the b-side of the old Acrobat single
release of Vengeance? ;-)

ps If you really want to go for tenuous there's always The Marshall Plan on
BOC's Cultasaurus Erectus album which features the riff.

pps Fantastic - a true labour of love - I am almost as impressed as I am
amazed

If you didn't know: There are of course many Black Sabbath versions of it
from the Born Again tour, but there's also one from 1989, where Gillan came
out and sang a couple of songs with the band, including Paranoid and the
Smokester. There's also a great unplugged version with Glenn Hughes and Joe
Lynn Turner from the "Voices of classic rock" sessions. I have them all as
mp3's, if you're interested.

The unplugged one is listed as:

Joe Lynn Turner & Glenn Hughes - Smoke On The Water 'Unplugged'

in my list.
The '89 Sabbath/Gillan one is interesting, because we're probably talking
about a totally other BS line up.

So if that could ever find it's way to Harrie's SOTW library.........
Mail me privatly.
